Bering Strait Tunnel Project Proposal

A long-term goal of this project proposal is to connect North, Central, and South America with Russia, Europe, Asia, and Africa by rail.

 

This would dramatically reduce energy requirements, exhaust emissions and expenses in shipping goods and raw materials by sea and provide an alternative to airline passenger service.

One possible method for crossing the Bering Strait, proposed here, is long, prefabricated tunnel segments. They would be fabricated on dry land below sea level in an area surrounded by man-made dikes near the Bering Strait.

 

The area would then be flooded and the tunnel segments (temporarily capped on the ends) would be floated to excavated trenches in the Bering Strait between the Diomede Islands, Russia, and Alaska, and then lowered into position. The sloped sections of tunnel would be fabricated on site after sea walls and dikes are built from the coasts of the Diomedes, Russia, and Alaska.

 

These man-made peninsulas would jut out from the coasts of the Diomedes, Russia and Alaska about 11 miles. The prefabricated tunnel segments would be about 5 miles long and the distance they traverse would become channels in the Bering Strait, one between Russia and the Diomedes and one between the Diomedes and Alaska.

 

The prefabricated tunnel design is a possible option to bored tunnels.

As well as rail lines- oil, natural gas pipelines, fiber optic telecommunication lines, and electric power transmission lines could also be run through the tunnels.

 

This project has the potential to improve the economy and stability throughout the world.
